World Arithmetic

I started counting the steps, an angry crowd stormed the Makhachkala Airport (the capital of Dagestan*), a methane explosion at a mine in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan.

On the night of Friday (10/27/23)to Saturday (10/28/23), a methane explosion occurred at a coal mine in the Karaganda region (Kazakhstan). The company claims that 252 miners were underground at the time of the incident. By Monday, 45 deaths were reported, 1 miner is still trapped, search and rescue operations are continuing, but the chances of finding him alive are getting smaller.

The company-owner of the ArcelorMittal mine was formed in 2006 as a result of the merger of Luxembourg company Arcelor and Indian Mittal Steel, owned by Indian businessman Lakshmi Mittal.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared October 29 a day of mourning and  instructed to terminate cooperation with the owner company.

Makhachkala, Dagestan.

On Sunday evening (10/29/2023), an anti-Israel mob broke into the Makhachkala airport building and then onto the airfield to prevent the arrival of “refugees from Israel”.

The protesters began to gather at the Makhachkala airport around 7 PM (Moscow time), waiting for “refugees from Israel”. First, in search of “Jews”, they began to check the documents of passengers arriving at the airport.

Then, several hundred people broke into the building of the international terminal of the airport, and began looking for Jews there. Soon, the rioters managed to break through to the airfield.

According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, the security forces managed to free the airport from the protesters only by 10:20 PM Moscow time.

The Interior Ministry said on Monday morning that security forces detained 60 rioters and identified 150 more. According to the Interior Ministry, nine police officers were injured during the riots, two of whom are in hospital. According to the Ministry of Health of Dagestan, in total, more than twenty people were injured — both security forces and civilians.

The head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, blamed the telegram channel “Morning of Dagestan” for the incident, which he believes is “controlled and regulated from the territory of Ukraine by traitors, Bandera**”. President Putin said the West is to blame for mob storming Russian airport.

According to the telegram channels, the airport itself suffered quite a lot: warehouses were destroyed, shops were looted. However, this information has not been officially confirmed.

Of course, this has not been confirmed, not all state TV channels showed these events with their news. Personally, I learned about this from bloggers who are considered “foreign agents” and are banned in Russia.

But, the state TV channels condemn Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip and show the consequences of snowfall in the Urals and Siberia.

The snowfall (in different cities of Siberia) came as a surprise to both drivers and utilities, traffic jams formed on the roads of cities during rush hour. Everything is as usual at the beginning of winter.

And, here we go, I am with my “steps”

Well, there must be something pleasant…

I read the book “Killers of a Certain Age” by Deanna Raybourn.

I don't like to retell books. In short: 4 friends (friends because colleagues), all 60-year-olds, but smart, active, and purposeful. For 40 years they have lived a double life, and now they just want a quiet retirement (everyone). This is where the story begins.

I noticed that one of the “friends” did 10 thousand steps a day to stay in good physical shape.

I'm not 60 years old yet, I don't like the gym (well, it's not my thing), but I want to look and feel good.

So, I reconnected the Health APP on my phone (I spent 3 days trying to figure it out) and started tracking the steps. It's not very convenient to carry a phone with you all the time, but it's interesting. One walk with a dog is 4 thousand steps. If you do not part with the phone all day, you can make as many as 8 thousand steps.

That's my/world arithmetic for this post.

*Dagestan, officially the Republic of Dagestan, is a mainly Muslim Russian republic in the North Caucasus, home to some 3.1 million people on the western edge of the Caspian Sea.

**Stepan Bandera negotiated with the Nazis to create the Ukrainian National Committee and the Ukrainian National Army in March 1945. After the war, Bandera settled with his family in West Germany. In 1959, Bandera was assassinated by a KGB agent in Munich.
