End of August in Russia

Tomsk telegram channel calls August - a month when the summer ends, parents and children get ready for a new school year (in Russia it starts on September 1st for all students),  gardeners pick up the crop and clean up the gardens.

Here, it’s a little bit different. It’s still warm, even hot and humid.

Humid but not wet how it is in Primorye.

Primorye is a territory in Far East Russia: the Amur River, Baikal Lake, border with China, and the Pacific Ocean.

Over the past day, a monthly amount of precipitation has fallen in Primorye. In Primorsky Krai, 29 settlements were cut off from road traffic due to flooding, several bridges were destroyed, suburban and long-distance passenger trains were delayed.

The beginning of the school year has been shifted by several days, taking into account another impending typhoon Sanba, - according to the governor Oleg Kozhemyako.

Another news that caught my attention from that region…

China has released a new map on which the island of Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island is part of the PRC.

The first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Dmitry Novikov called this fact a misunderstanding.

The story is,

Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island remained a disputed territory of Russia and China for many years.

In 2004, President Putin and the Chinese leadership signed an agreement under which part/half of the island is ceded to China.

I looked it up online (not so deep though).

During the time of Tsarist Russia, the territory of today's Primorsky Krai belonged to China. After the signing of the treaty in 1858, it passed into the possession of Russia.

Many Russians think that China (as a country) is their friend.

But independent international expert Andrew Lang calls Russian-Chinese relations at best a partnership, at worst a marriage of convenience.

I wouldn’t be surprised that soon the Island becomes Chinese territory not  only on the map.

Not everywhere is as wet as in Primorye.

The forest fire in Gelendzhik has become the largest in the city since 2015, Mayor Alexey Bogodistov said.

The day before, 1.5 hectares of forest caught fire in the Kupriyanov Schel microdistrict. Subsequently, the fire spread to an area of more than 118 hectares. There are no casualties. More than 400 rescuers, 200 volunteers, and 80 pieces of equipment were involved in extinguishing.

The fire was localized after more than 24 hours.

It is believed that the culprit of the fire was a 40-year-old local resident. Previously, a man on his house plot in the area of the Bobrukova Gap was preparing an electric cable for sale. As a result, he allowed the earthen litter to ignite, after which the fire spread to the trees and engulfed the forest.
